I was browsing my Facebook account one evening when I came across an ad for Bar Boys A New Musical. They will have a re-run of the musical pala. I actually missed the first leg of the show because it sold out fast. That’s why, when I found out about the re-run through an ad, I messaged my friend MCC and my boss AVN (I’ll give you an acronym of their name because that’s what they allowed me to use for this blog) immediately and invite them to watch it with me. Thankfully, they both said yes right away, so we bought the tickets on the spot. We even got the VIP tickets. Woohoo! 🙂
It was D-day for the musical, and we arrived at Circuit Makati a bit earlier to have dinner prior to watching the show. Our time slot was the last show of the day. By the time we got there, we looked for a restaurant, but most of them were full, so we decided to choose Yellow Cab since there were fewer people there.
After we ate, which was just 30 minutes before the show started, we headed to the Powermac Center Spotlight to get tickets and get in line since we knew that it was first come, first served. That was actually our mistake. We got so caught up in conversation during dinner that we forgot to get our tickets first. I also didn’t know what got into me or why I didn’t think of getting the tickets as soon as we arrived — maybe I was just so excited that I wasn’t thinking clearly. I had been to lots of concerts and knew the protocol: get tickets, then roam around, take pictures, and watch the show afterward. But this time, we ended up getting our tickets after dinner, watching the show, and taking pictures, which was not the order I was used to.
So we went to the ticket booth to get our tickets and we were told that someone had claimed our tickets and that the 200 queue numbers had already been distributed, leaving nothing for us. I actually found this weird because I understood that there would be queuing numbers to keep things organized but I didn’t get why it was limited to 200 and not equal to the number of attendees per section. It was no big deal so I just shrugged it off. Even though the staff didn’t explain why, he was kind enough to validate our tickets and guide us to the line so we could be assisted since my boss had a PWD ID (for vision).
Bar Boys A New Musical
We went inside the venue and were guided to our seats. We were seated in the third-row aisle, which was a good seat. Looking around, we were in awe at how close we were to the stage. The venue set up was really intimate, which I really liked and I also loved how they incorporated the pillars and Lady Justice in the stage set up. It was very on-point.
When the show started, I felt excited and nervous because I had watched the movie, so I had high expectations for the musical. Believe me, it did not disappoint. It was so good that it surpassed my expectations. I gave them a standing ovation and clapped. If I were to rate the musical, I would have given it 10,000/100 or even more.
I can vouch that Bar Boys A New Musical is a Must See Musical this Season!
I felt all the feels: I cried, laughed, and teared up again. Haha! The story really portrayed the hardships law students faced—like the pressures of law school, sacrificing family time, love, and the test of ideals and friendships as they chased their dreams of becoming lawyers. Being in law school, I knew the hardships each student faced, so this musical touched my heart.
I also loved how interactive it was. There were scenes where they included the audience in the acting, making us feel like we were part of the show. That was a nice ad-lib they made. And of course, the funny banters, and the emotional exchanges were just balanced. The writer found the balance so that it was not too much sadness or laughter. It was just the right mix, which made the show great.
They also used full original songs, which was a plus. My favorite was “May Singil Ang Pangarap” (I didn’t really know if this was the title. 🙂 ). I hoped they would release the full song list on Spotify as soon as the show ended so we can relive it.
While I loved everyone, the characters that stood out to me were Erik, Torran, and Justice Hernandez.
Welcome to Law School : Bar Boys 2024 Photo Spot
After the show, I told MCC and AVN that we should wait in line first and not exit because based on my experience with RENT: The Musical, all VIP ticket holders had the chance to take a group photo with the cast and interact with them, too. I suggested we wait first because it would surely be the same with Bar Boys A New Musical. I said to them “Tingnan mo, lalabas yan sila dyan. Haha” Lo, and behold, the main cast did went out towards the venue door and proceeded to the photobooth area. Siyempre, nagpapicture na kami!
After we had our photos taken, we proceeded to the main hall to take photos at the Bar Boys A New Musical photo spot.
You Should Definitely Watch Bar Boys A New Musical!
Whether you’re in law school or not, you absolutely have to watch Bar Boys A New Musical. I assure you that it will be worth it.
Honestly, if I had extra money or someone offered me a complimentary ticket to see it again, I would take the chance! We (MCC, AVN, and I) just tease nga each other that, if all Law School Bar Operations offered this musical as a fundraising event, we bet they’d sell out since it’s that relatable.
Also, you don’t have to watch the movie to appreciate the musical as it has its own unique charm that will make you love it.
Grab your tickets today!
The show runs from October 4, 2024 – November 3, 2024. For tickets you may visit Barefoot Theatre Collaborative Facebook Page.
