Korean Visa Denied: What I Learned From My Cousin’s Visa Application Story

Posted on September 2, 2017 | by karenmeetsworld | Category: Oh My K!, Travel Adventures

My cousin and I were in Gateway yesterday for #MotteinManilaConcert when I received a text message from Rakso Travel Agency saying my cousin’s Korean visa application was ‘Denied’. I felt confused, heartbroken, and shocked when I found out so I send her a reply to ask why”. She said that my cousin “failed to qualify to the visa category applied for”.

At first, I really don’t know how to break the news to her because I know she will be sad as she really prepared for this trip. I called my friends that time asking for advise on this:

  • Should I tell it to my cousin before the concert so she can let it out by shouting GD’s fan chants and singing GD songs during the concert? ; or
  • Should I tell it to my cousin after the concert so she can enjoy the whole concert?

Majority of them voted the first option, so I broke the news to her while we were looking for a restaurant to eat before the concert. I showed her the text message as I say this: “hey, I have something to tell you, it’s okay to cry and let it out! Rakso texted me and she said your Korean visa application was denied. I know it was hard. Let’s check later how we can appeal to the embassy, okay? We’ll research on it! Now, let your feelings out on the concert? GD was your bias right? Maybe this was GD’s way of saying: do not go to my country just yet, I’ll bring YG artist in the Philippines instead.” I really tried my best to sound emphatic but I think this didn’t make her feel  better.

Denied Visa Application

Denied Korea Visa Application NoteDenied Korea Visa Application : Stapled On Her Passport.

After the concert, we tried remembering her visa requirements and checked where she lacks so we can fix it for our appeal to Korean embassy. Visa requirements were as follows:

Requirement List Notes
Application Form Check
1 piece of Passport size colored picture Check
Original Passport (should be valid for more than 6months) Check
Photocopy of Passport Bio-page (page 2) Check
Original Certificate of Employment (must include applicant’s position, date hired, compensation, office address, HR landline number(cell-phone number is not allowed), HR e-mail address) It was her company’s trunk line numbers that were written on her COE instead of HR number.
Original Personal Bank Certificate (must include account type, current balance, account opening date, ADB) She only opened her bank account a few months before the visa application, and her current balance I think was just enough for a 6-day trip to Seoul with just a bit extra.
Bank Statement (original or certified true copy of bank statements/passbook for the last 3 months)  Check
ITR(Income Tax Return) or Form 2316 Copy She only passed her Form 2316 since ITR was only given when you already were one year with the company. And she was only 8 months with the company. It was her first job too!

Our speculations why she was denied…

Overall, the reason why we think her visa was denied and marked as “failed to qualify to the visa category you have applied for” were because of the following:

  • She failed to submit the requirements that will verify her financial capacity to travel to Seoul for 6-days.
  • She failed to proved her travel frequency since she haven’t traveled outside the country yet. This will be her first *if it was approved*.
  • She failed to proved her employment income and details since she didn’t passed an ITR and there were many contact numbers that were given which makes it hard to verify her employment details.

She tried fixing her requirements for an appeal but given the time constraint she has (one week) and their company’s strict attendance system, she wasn’t able to absent and appeal her visa. 🙁

Update 10.26.2018: Cebu Appeal is now stricter too! Unlike before that it’s easier to apply for an appeal in Cebu, they are now strict and there’s no guarantee that all appeals will get approved. So, it is still a risk.

Lesson We Learned When Applying a Korean Visa

One lesson that we learned when applying a Korean Visa for the first time was “research for visa tips first”. This was what we failed to do as we only followed what I did last time when I applied one which was just to submit the needed requirements.

With that, we wanted to help you travelers to avoid our mistakes and share few things that we have researched:

  • Book your hotel/hostel/guesthouse first. You will need to write the address and contact details of the place where you will stay on the visa application form. Don’t worry about the cancellation as there were hotel, hostel, or guesthouse that accept reservations with no down payment, so if ever you get denied, you will not get worried of cancelling your reservation.
  • Save money for your trip. Let’s say you will travel in Korea for 6-days and the budget needed for the trip was Php 45,000 (USD 877). Have at least Php 60,000 (safe bet) in your bank account 6 months before your visa application. Well, assuming that your maintaining balance was Php 10,000. Of course you don’t want it to be just exact to avoid issue on your travel cost. Also, be realistic with your travel cost, make sure that what you write on your travel cost on the form must be equal or lesser than the fund in your bank statement or bank certificate. If you think your fund was not enough for your stay in Korea, ask for sponsor, but your sponsor should of course was capable of supporting your trip.
  • Get an explanation and sponsorship letter and have it notarized. If you are like my cousin who has just enough fund for the trip and have no ITR submitted, you may submit a notarized explanation and sponsorship letter explaining why you only have a Form 2316, an exact amount on the bank and also tell that a family member will sponsor your trip, airfare, hotel. Of course, this needs to be accompanied by your sponsors bank statement and ITR.
  • Travel to non-visa countries. It was a plus if you travel to other countries in the last 5 years since it will somehow prove your financial capability to travel. Don’t worry though if your stamps were in your old passport, you can just photocopy it and submit it along with other requirements on your visa. Easy peasy!

Hope you can have hassle free visa application!

My korean visa got denied for the same reason as well. I submitted complete requirements and a reasonable amount of money in my bank. I even have a Japan visa in my passport. Still, I didn’t get one. How can someone appeal for Korean visa? Is it possible? Or are they really strict with the rule that you can only apply again after six months?

Hi Elle, from my friend’s experience, she requested to have her visa appealed a week after with complete requirements this time since she really need to go to Seoul. She got interviewed in the embassy during that time and she was granted a visa same day. Unfortunately, I don’t know the process for it. Perhaps depends on the staff on the embassy, some are strict with the six-month rule. While some are not, depending on your reasons to visit the country.

Hi, will there still a chance to get my visa even though I stated in my application form that I went to Thailand for a school trip but the stamp was in my old passport and I did not get to submit the photocopy of it. Since the requirements stated ”Original & Copy of valid visas and arrival stamps to OECD member countries for the past 5 years” I though I won’t need it since Thailand is not a member. Kindly reply. Thank you in advance!

Hello, the visa can still get approved without it. As long as you’ve submitted all the complete requirements and proven your financial status or capacity to travel. Based on my experience those who got disapproved are those who didn’t qualify to their requirements most specifically on the financial part. Let’s hope for the best on your VISA.

    Hi,

My bank account has been running for 7 yrs now, and im planning to go to Korea this August, they said that there should be atleast enough money in your bank, for bank statement purposes – for the last 3 months before applying.
But my account for the first week of May went down to 1000php, and got enough balance after,

Do you think it would affect my application to get a visa?

Hello, Berlin! I would recommend for you to not touch your savings 3 months before applying a visa. Just to be sure. It’s what I do and I only withdraw after I got the visa/passport. Although, check if your bank account is more than what you’ll spend on your trip. Because we need to avoid for them to think that your bank statement is malicious. For instance, you already have 100k on your account for that 7 years and the past 3 months have 50k and you will travel for three days in Korea. That will be enough to shoulder your trip, so a Php 1,000 drop will not impact the visa. But just to be sure, don’t withdraw your account as you get your bank statement or visa but depositing money is recommended.

Hi Nancy, my friend read on the blog about the visa re-appeal. Although she didn’t provide me the link. She just shared her experience to me as I write this blog. I think during the interview on the embassy the consul checks that her reason for the re-appeal is valid so she was granted a visa. But first she works on the requirements where she thinks she failed and she resubmit directly to the embassy.

hello everyone!i submitted the complete documents but my visa was denied here in Thailand. Some people said that it was denied it’s because i don’t have a plane ticket.I didn’t booked a plane ticket because it’s not one of the requirements. I got these reasons why i am denied.I am denied because your purpose of stay has not been explained in details and your current status (family and economic conditions) does not prove your return within the given period of stay-what does this mean?

Hi Fhely, it seems that the reason for your visa being denied is because of your plane ticket. They can’t verify if you are really going in and out of Korea for the period of stay you included on your visa application because you don’t have flight details. I’m not sure how it works on your country. But it’s really important for everyone who applies for visa to have their plane ticket and hotel booked before they apply for one. In our country, while the plane and hotel isn’t part of the list of requirements, the details of the hotel, and travels are included on the visa application form.

Hi! Just an additional info: For Filipinos applying in the Philippines, a copy of your plane ticket is not a requirement. The Embassy discourages booking your flight before applying for a visa.

For those who wants to appeal for their denied korea visa, you can try to appeal it here in Cebu. Most of the blogs i’ve read about making an appeal were processed in Cebu and they got approved. But no assurance though. I worked in Hanatour Cebu and i can help to assist in reapplying your denied visa.

Hi Jes, yes it’s possible for you to book a 14 day stay since the visa will cover a 30-day stay. However, when applying for a Korean visa you will need to declare the days and the name of the hotel where you will stay. I would suggest for you to book first in Agoda for a 5-day stay make sure it’s on free cancellation so you won’t be charge when you change your plans afterwards.

Your brother can provide his financial docs. For the itr, you have to explain why you don’t have one and tell that your trip will be sponsored by your brother and all and have it notarized. Like it needs legality for Korean embassy to ensure that you will return to the country… You have to prove that you are financially capable of travelling there… 🙂

If you’re above 25 years old, having a sponsor might put you on a disadvantage. This means that you don’t have the capacity to fund your travel period in KR and that you don’t have strong economic ties here.

Hello, depending on the days you are staying in Korea. Either would do. Just be sure that it was not a one time deposit. Like 60k in one time deposit will be a red flag. I used my savings account before when I submitted. I will fly to Korea for a week so a minimum of 60k is required based on my own computation to my activities, hotels, and all before I applied for my visa. I didn’t withdraw also the whole time my visa is under process just for me to be sure. But the important thing that they will look is that we have to prove that we can afford the trip.

Hi TJ, I’m sorry to hear that your sister’s visa got denied. In any case, were there issues with her documents? Like how stable was her work? and all? Or was she a student? I had a similar case with a friend and when we dig in to her requirements, we found out that one factor that made her visa got denied was because of her ITR. We’re just working on it for her reappeal in Cebu (we’re still hoping it will be a success though) But, I’m not sure what’s the case for you. It’s probably within their requirements. There’s a new update now on their requirements something about a list of the taxes or something similar and I was informed that the consul becomes stricter now, even in Cebu.

And yes I saw the update that they’re become stricter in Cebu but we hope they will grant her a visa since it’s her 2nd time and we submitted almost the same requirements/documents/purpose of travel needed last yr since there’s no changes in our employment/bank.

Hello. I hope your sister visa reappeal will have great result! 🙂 Oh! My friend also reappealed in Cebu few weeks ago and we resubmit all requirements that we thought made them denied her visa Like affidavit for explanation etc. And guess what? The agency messaged her that her visa got approved! She consulted a lawyer for the reappeal. I guess your sister can submit the visa of your parents (or the one she will go with on the trip) And other document that will support that it’s a family trip with detailed itinerary. I hope your sister will be able too! You can do it! Fighting! 🙂

Hi, Karen! When you submitted your appeal in Cebu, did you have to submit all the requirements as if you’re reapplying all over again or did you just submit a letter, and proof that you can sustain your trip there? Thank you!

Hello Rendcel, when my friend visa got denied we reviewed her requirements again and work on the problem ITR. She met with a lawyer to fix the documents and provide affidavit for letter / document needed. Then she resubmitted all requirements including the additional documents from the lawyer in Cebu. Then she got her visa accepted. I would recommend for you to review your documents — where do you think you’re lacking? Then consult a lawyer. If you are travelling with family and their visa got approved. Submit a copy of their visa too and tell that you are travelling with them. The reason for visa denial is case to case per person, so it’s highly advisable to review everything before submitting the documents to Cebu for reappeal. I hope all goes well for you. 🙂

Hi! I already submitted my application, but I realized I have one more issue. My agency advised me to not deposit anything on my bank account anymore as money isn’t the reason why I was denied. So for 2 months, my account has no movement. Do you think this would affect my reapplication, even if I’ve already corrected and gave solution on the purpose of reapplication? 🙂

    Hi,

I will be traveling to Korea June of next year. 2nd country to visit (Thailand was the first) 1st week of december 2018. Just a bit nervous on the Visa application for korea though i already have an active bank account for the past 3 years and there are indeed transactions on it both Withdraw and Deposit. Latest figure i have is 40K. but sometimes due to unnecessary situation, forced to withdraw some amount but making sure to deposit again. Would there be in any chance that i might get denied on this. I’m working with my present company for 2 years already. And i read on some blogs that if applicable can submit the photocopy of my PRC ID? Would it can help?

Hello Jomar, I understand your worries on applying a Korean visa as the Korean Embassy consul has been stricter this year. If you have 40k in your bank account I suggest that you lessen your stay in Korea, like you can input 3 days and 2 nights. Just to match your travel allowance capacity. Your funding is around $500 for the trip. You have to convince the consul that you can really afford the trip so you must plan your funds to the # of days you will be staying in Korea. Hope this helps.

Hi Margi, From what I know, you may apply reappeal in an agency in Cebu but not directly sa embassy as they distribute the visa application na to travel agencies last year. I hope this helps. 🙂

    Hi,

Does the embassy really verify your docs? like calling your HR, calling bank representative to check your bank statements, calling BIR? I was just bothered. What if our HR can’t answer the phone, same case with my friend. Their HR wasn’t able to answer the phone, the embassy didn’t try to call again and her visa was denied.

Hello Wela, during my first time application for Korean Visa the Korean Embassy really verify our docs. They called our HR to check our employment background esp. the salary and length of service. If the HR is not around they will call again from other time / day! However, I’m not sure how many times they will call. It really depends on the consul. If the consul is strict they won’t call again. I can only tell based on my experience. It can be one time verification or not. That’s the reason I advise all of them to have the company of their visa application so HR is ready or someone they know like manager to act as HR so when the HR is not around someone can answer. It’s a case to case basis…

Hello Almera, sorry to hear that your visa got denied. What I could suggest is consult an agency on the things you need to present for re appeal. My friend re-appealed for her visa with the help of hankookceb in Makati with the same case as you. I mean she has travel schedule 2 weeks before her visa got denied. She was guided on the things she need to get from a lawyer like letters and other things. Depending on the reason you got denied. There are requirements for it. Yes, it has to be notarized. Yes, the earlier the better. Process it as early as tomorrow. Kasi 1 week yung visa re appeal. Goodluck!

Hello! I have received denied visa as well this Feb 20 lang, how fresh di ba? But I am not sure with the reason given to me by the consul/korean embassy. The reason of my denied visa was “Failure to explain purpose of entry” Perhaps, do you have any idea on what part of my documents nagkamali or what? 🙁 Since I clearly recalled na tama naman yung pinili ko na for Tourism lang talaga ipupunta ko dun.

Any suggestions or recommendations para makapagready for reapplication :(((

Hope you can help me! I am so sad and frustrated pa rin.

Hello Patricia, sorry to hear that your visa got denied. I find it weird that this is the most common issue of visa being denied this year. I can’t judge for sure as I cannot see the documents you’ve passed. Can you elaborate your requirements? Try to match it to your bank account and savings and duration of stay in Korea? Did you stay in a hotel or airbnb? Also, how long have you been employed? You may review those things deeply and you may find the answer. My friend reappealed through hankukceb in makati and she consulted a lawyer for the new documents needed as suggested by the agency before she submitted it for reappeal. So, I recommend that once you reviewed your initial documents, consult an agency, they should know what you need other than the initial document. Hope your reappeal will be a success!

Hi Ms. Karen, got visa denied this feb 2019. The reason is “you failed to prove the purpose of entry to Korea.” Im not sure if its because of my work or money reason. Kailangan ba wag magwithdraw in 3 months? Thank you! ????

Hello Angel, I’m sorry to hear that your visa got denied. Madami kasing factor na tinitingnan yung embassy based sa experienced ko. But I couldn’t say for sure kasi iba iba yung status ng mga tao. For instance, may I ask how many days are you planning to stay in Korea? Who are you with? Does the bank account equals your salary? Have you visited other countries prior to visiting Korea? I mean kasi medyo factor din how you are earning. It has to match based on your salary and tenure. Unless there’s a written explanation where you get source of funds. Medyo mahigpit kasi yung embassy ngayon. What have you written dun sa parang budget for travelling? Are you staying sa hotel? Ayun… If you can provide more. Then we can assess siguro. But if you want to reappeal since you wanted to visit HankukCeb Agency in Makati helps sa reappeal ng visa.

hi karen, thank you for this post!

I am currently applying for the 2nd time for my korean visa. My last visit was last 2015. I am a frequest traveller (about 10 travels a year usually for business and family vacations) some with visas with OECD too.

Now I plan on travelling back to Korea for 4 days.
My problem is korean visa now requests bank statement for the last 3 months. The bank account im submitting tho have more than 150k in it, it doesn’t have movement since november 2018 which was a withdrawal. So my bank statements are empty for last 3 months. I just asked for bank to print for 1 year. Also it is not as active since it is a savings account for my solo travels. which only happens once every 2 years. (I save for it first) would this inactivity affect my application?

    Thanks 🙂

      hi Rose! 🙂

From what I know, the bank statement can be any three months from your account. I don’t think it can affect your application since it’s understandable that your bank account is your savings account. It’s also a plus that you’re a frequent traveller. If you need further assistance, you may contact Lucel of PeepS Travel & Tours. She assisted some people who have been denied a visa and got approved. Although, she’s based in Cebu. 🙂

Hi! I’m sort of low on funds with the ADB side (though it is a payroll account so funds are constantly coming in.. and out mostly lol) but will be only staying for a 3-Day trip for a concert. Is it wise to write a cover letter that I already have a ticket for the show and that is my main purpose of going to Korea?
What should be my stated budget for that 3-Day trip?
Also, is it better to include and invitation letter (not a sponsorship one) from a Kr national instead of writing a cover letter and saying that my main purpose is to wat h a concert?

Hope you can help! Thank you!

Hello, I would advise for you to prepare for the cover letter for the concert and attached a photocopy of the concert ticket as you get your VISA. As for the invitation letter of a Kr national, for me personally, I will not submit it, but you may also confirm this with the agency who will assist you for the visa.

Hi Karen, I’m going to travel with my family in Korea but my problem is my financial status. I just started working last march 2019 (it was my first job) so i dont have itr or enough money in my bank account. Both of my parents can financially support my travel in Korea and they are willing to be my sponsor. I have already booked a flight and hotel for our vacation. I’ve been to other countries like taiwan, but i was an exchange student there and stayed for almost 5 months. I just want to ask what are the additional requirements that i need for korean visa application and if i have strong chance of getting approved? Thank you.

Hi Donna, I would advise na you travel first muna if it’s your first time kasi it’s hard. However, if you will travel through an agency like a group tour then maybe there’s still a chance that you will pass. But it really depends on your records. They will check different factors kasi. They are stricter now compare before.

Hi Ms. Karen. Im planning to reapply korean visa this year. Feeling ko kasi i got denied last year because of my financial status. Kahit na 60k plus yung laman ng acct ko. One time lang kasi yun dineposit yung 60k. My question is can i open a new acct this year to be ready sa pag apply ng visa this year? Dapat 3 months na hindi gagalawin, right? Tapos unti2x lang yung paghulog sa acct, hindi biglaang laki. Tama ba? Ilang months/years po ba dapat na nakapag open ng acct? Thanks ms karen.

My Korean visa application was denied also. The thing is I’ve been to 7 countries before my application, and I have sufficient funds in my bank, have my ITR. Basically my application pretty much seemed to go bull’s eye but it missed for the same reason. I don’t know why. My only guess is that they weren’t able to prove my employment because I gave the trunkline.

That maybe the case, because as much as possible you must give the direct line as the immigration is going to check on your employment details. Or might be because of the CoVid-19 so they are holding visas?

Hello, Karen, good evening, I’m just overwhelmed over what happened to me last week, I submitted my student visa to south Korean embassy, they called me that my application has been processed, but no visa and no reason for not giving me visa, they asked me to check their portal my data was not retrieved, I’m worried I wrote an appeal letter they didn’t reply me, so I want to reapply with new application since my data was not found in their portal, my question here is that, can I change the company account to another one since the previous application was not in their portal. I will appreciate your reply thank you.

Hello Oby! I hope you got it all sorted out in the end. Usually, when you forward your documents, all you have to do is wait and check on their site from time to time on the status. When you got denied, they will provide you a paper with list of reasons for visa denial and checked one that applies. From what my cousin had experienced, we only deal with an agency to make the legwork easier.

Hi Ayee. I’m not sure if they are accepting applications now, given that the Korean Embassy has released new rules on visa applications over the past two years. However, I’ve heard that some travel agencies assist with Korean visa issues. You might consider joining this Facebook group, where some travel agents offer help. Just be sure to be cautious when contacting them—ask as many questions as necessary to ensure their legitimacy. Hope this helps!
